I am currently preparing for a large show for February of 2017. I am busily creating new work for the show. This is one of the recent pieces that I have embroidered.
So yesterday I finally got to check out my local chapter of the American Embroidery Guild. It was a lot of fun to talk with people that have the same passion for Embroidery!!!! I am so excited about joining and making friends with my fellow guild members!! This afternoon I entered three of my works in an exhibition at my local art center. I teach Embroidery and surface design at the Art center occasionally, so I was glad to share my work in this exhibition. If your in the area check out my work during the month of October! Pullen Art Center 105 Pullen Rd, Raleigh, NC 27607 http://www.raleighnc.gov/arts/content/Arts/Articles/PullenArtsCenter.html In other news, I have finished the initial planning stage for a new piece. I am very excited about the composition, and I plan to start stitching on the design soon. I will post pictures of it soon! Now that I have updated my website, I think I should probably update my artist statement. I wrote my statement two years ago, when I was putting my Senior show together. My work has shifted in different ways since then. Writing an artist statement always makes me think of the place my work has in my life, and where I see my life going. I shouldn't have to say that those thoughts, spin off into infinite possibilities and anxieties that make writing really hard. Writing something like an artist statement is so clinical and personal at the same time. Anyway it's a hard thing to write, but I need to update it soon. I've got all this art stuff and life stuff I need to do. All of these things are kind of spinning in my head, and I want to do it all, but I know that I can't get it all done at once. I have got to budget my time and slow down and all of that boring stuff. At the end of the day, I would like to keep all my plates spinning like this lovely Asian plate spinner. Hopefully the plates I decide to spin won't break. Ok, it has taken me awhile to update lately. Life kind of got in the way. I was finally able to finish a large embroidery piece that I have been working on for months. YAYAYAYYAYAY! It always feels good when you finish something. In other news, I spotted the best find ever at the local thrift store this week! A Canon Rebel SLR camera for $30!!!!! It's15 years old and uses film, but I was able to take some high quality photos of the work I have done this year. I think the photographs are decent considering the home lighting I used. Here's hoping I get to take pictures of new work later this year. If you are interested please visit my website www.marystarke.weebly.com Now that I have told people on Facebook and twitter about this blog---I know that I have to commit to it. This is kind of daunting, especially since I have a hard time keeping up with social media on a monthly let alone weekly basis. All I can do now is try to post regularly and pray that I don't run out of things to say! Tonight I looked at the first blog posts of some artists I follow regularly. I was really blown away when I read Joetta Maue's first set of entries. She started her blog back in 2007, and you can really see her growth as a writer and an artist on her blog. She is one of my favorite embroidery artists. In fact, her portrait series is a major source of inspiration for my current work. It was really reassuring to see the way she started her blog, and it made me feel more confident about moving forward. If you are interested in looking at Joetta's blog or artwork you can find out more here and here. http://littleyellowbirds.blogspot.com/ http://www.joettamaue.com/ All of the work shown on this post was made by Joetta Maue.
ps: can you already tell that I love run on sentences, and that I have awful grammar? Its true. Hello, My name is Mary and I am a fiber artist. I have set up this blog to share my own embroidery and to spread the word about the many artists I am currently obsessed with. I recently graduated with my BA in studio art and thousands of dollars in student loans. Like most people I am constantly terrified and excited about the future. I hope that someone out in cyberspace is inspired by this blog. |
